    About This Episode

Natty Bumpercar returns to the Bumperpodcast after a hiatus to discuss feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world. In this introspective episode, Natty explores the etymology of 'overwhelmed,' 'underwhelmed,' and 'whelmed,' wondering why we can't just be normally whelmed. He shares candid stories about quarantine life, homeschooling his kids, dealing with a toy-destroying dog, and the challenges of performing comedy over Zoom. Natty reflects on the strange nature of time during quarantine, unfinished projects piling up, and finding silver linings in spending more family time together, even when grocery bills seem impossibly high.

    Memorable Quotes

“I looked at myself in the mirror and I said today is not the day that I'm gonna break… and as I left the room I heard the mirror whisper 'or is it' and I was like whoa hey mirror I thought you had my back”

    — Natty Bumpercar

“I'm hoping that this podcast is leaving you considerably whelmed. Not overwhelmed, not underwhelmed. I want to whelm you.”

Natty Bumpercar: oh bumper podcast what's been what are you doing who what are you where you been at where you been hiding from me or i've been missing you uh i know you're thinking over there whoa whoa don't don't point fingers at us we're the listeners we're the bumper podcast geteers where have you been natty natty bumper car who's supposed to be recording this on a weekly basis and hasn't for a while i don't know i try i even i here's the thing i have been overwhelmed uh can just considerably overwhelmed with uh the state of the world and uh i just i i haven't been able to get to it and then i started to think what does overwhelmed even mean like and then i started researching it and it was pretty cool because i feel like i'm constantly overwhelmed uh and then i was just like have i ever just been whelmed i would like to just at some point in my life instead of being overwhelmed just be whelmed just be uh just a baseline whelmed uh there's there's also you know sometimes i'm underwhelmed but uh currently overwhelmed so i'd like to find a nice a nice middle ground um and so what i started to do is i started to think about what does overwhelmed a thing well overwhelmed um it it just means to to bury or drown beneath a huge mass it's like a whoa that sounds intense you were overwhelmed right and uh so which is how i feel like it's it's cool because i think it used to be more of a uh almost like a nautical term where like a ship would be overwhelmed by the waves right and uh they it eventually kind of started to mean that uh you know you're it's you're just anything that can is taking you down is beating you down you you could become overwhelmed so in this scenario i'm the ship i'm the ship out on a sea on a very stormy sea and the waves are crashing over me they're overwhelming me they're threatening to take me the ship out of my ship down but no no no my friends they will not take they will not take me down no sir i um i did i woke up the other morning and i looked in the mirror and i was trying to give myself a pep talk and uh i i looked at the mirror and i looked at myself in the mirror and i said today is not the day that i'm gonna break and uh and i felt good about myself a little know you gotta build yourself up sometimes and as i as i left the room with a mirror in it i heard the mirror whisper you know or is it and i was like whoa hey mirror i thought you had my back and it's just like i have your reflection not your back and i was like ah good point good point um anyway so uh underwhelmed is another thing right are you overwhelmed are you underwhelmed underwhelmed isn't even a phrase it doesn't make any sense because uh if overwhelmed is talking about the waves crashing over the the the bow of the ship threatening to to pull it under you know one's ever going to be like ah the ocean is very calm today the boat is calm very underwhelmed now of course you might know what it's like ah we went to see that new movie i was super excited about it i didn't live up to my standards i was pretty underwhelmed so wait you're saying that the waves just were uh very calm at your at your ship i don't know and then and then whelmed i really feel like we should bring it back or i don't even know if it was ever there i'm hoping that this podcast is leaving you considerably whelmed not i don't want to be overwhelmed i don't want to be too much for you because there's too much else going on and i certainly don't want to you know uh be aiming too low i don't want to underwhelm you no i want to overwhelm you i want if you ever if somebody's like oh you listen to the bumper podcast yeah i do are you a bumper podcast couture i suppose i am how do you feel about that in one word can you describe to me uh the bumper podcast one word and you can just look at them straight in the eye and you can say whelmed it's gonna that's probably gonna go on our business card we're we're gonna hire a skywriter to you uh you know just write uh to an advertisement in the sky so people can know to tune in and they'll say it'll just say whelmed and we'll forget to uh actually put the bumper podcast or anything that ties it to us but eventually enough people are gonna know that when they hear the word whelmed boom they're talking about they should be thinking about the bumper podcast in my opinion the dog just joined me i have to tell you she's been completely underwhelmed today by the amount of attention and love that she's received and um what she's done to make up for that lack of love and attention is to destroy toys not my toys because i keep them in the high ground all right and she will not overwhelm my defenses to get to these toys the children however leave their toys scattered around the house everywhere that the dog can reach them and i uh a lot of times i'll wake up to shrieking ah yee ah oh which is a completely overwhelming way to start your day and i burst down the stairs and i say what's going on down here the dog ate our toy ah did she overwhelm your defenses no the toy was on the ground i'm like you can't leave the toy you can't leave the toys on the ground your toys look like her dog toys so she's going to eat them but they don't listen because why would they i don't know nothing i'm just their dad dad's that's a fun thing with kids is they're like ah dad you don't know nothing you don't know my my worries you don't know nothing about me my life i'm like buddy i helped make you like what are you talking about i know i've been here every day i know i know a little bit about you but i don't know anything about you about you uh but no no no no no dad you don't you come you're completely underwhelming me as a parent i'm like all right that's we don't have to keep using the over under and the whelmed during the episode um i was trying to figure out when the last time that i sent out an episode was and then i realized i don't even know what today is i've completely given up on time we did an episode of a while ago uh about time being linear and time folding in on itself and how strange time can be and then we got into nostalgia and stuff and the thing is is i don't it's i wake up every day and i don't i'm just like like we had to do the kids homework this morning and they were like what's today what assignment do i do and i was just like oof i had to look at my calendar i was just like it's uh well obviously it's tuesday and then i'm like how is it tuesday that's weird i mean yesterday was monday huh all right sure but i don't really believe i mean it's just like there's nothing uh solid concrete about the days that that are keeping me and my brain kind of in line with what day it is um which is a struggle when all this quarantine started i was i was very i was cleaning all the time and i was making lists of stuff to do and then i think just the more and more stuff that i was doing i have all these projects and i'm like oh my god i'm gonna have to do this project and i would start a project and then i would realize i don't have all the pieces to finish the project and i can't go to the store and so that's on the list and the more unfinished projects that i would get the more overwhelmed i would get right and and so then i would my list would just keep growing longer and then you know you wake up every day and you're just like okay we got to get the kids food we got to get their school stuff ready we got to talk to the teachers we got to talk to the school we got to talk to we got it we got to talk to the teachers we got to work we got to do the bumper podcast we got to do the uh hanging out with pig and pal show every day which is still happening gotta take the dog for a walk oh man we got to start the car every so often this is we it's just very strange but i have to say and i was talking to someone yesterday a medical professional if you will and what we were talking about was uh and i think i mentioned this before silver lining uh it's great to be able to hang out with my family i love it love it to pieces i make jokes about it about not wanting to hang out with a family but i i actually love it to pieces and um you know it's it's it's nice to be able to be the kid's teacher and to realize that i was completely correct and not going into uh being a teacher like for a job i should not have ever done that i'm glad i did not ever do that it's completely over the top i'm glad i did not ever do that i'm glad i did not see everything's overwhelming you go to the grocery store you're overwhelmed you walk into the cleaning supplies aisle you're underwhelmed you go to the front to pay and you're like how much food are we eating how can how is it possibly this much money every single time what are we what are we doing are we i mean all we're doing is eating is what's happening that's the only way that we've been able to get our brain levels our serotonin levels to uh to be at a nice even keel uh so that we're not overwhelmed and we're not underwhelmed is we just keep eating we might want to make sure that our stomach is completely whelmed i love it um anyway how are you doing are you hanging in there you you doing okay yeah i've been doing zoom comedy shows zoom comedy shows and um actually i have a a meeting with zoom uh at some point they haven't sent me the invitation yet but they said they are because we're gonna want to try to figure out the platform to see how i can make make zoom comedy shows even better because right now it's just uh you know you're just one random person just on video talking to nobody and then uh you know somebody will type in the chat lol and you're like ah that doesn't have the same effect on me and i'm like oh my god i'm on a comedian who's telling jokes uh as actually hearing someone laugh seeing someone type lol no it doesn't it doesn't do it for you you're like oh i guess that one that was a big one i got i got one lol oh wait look i got a uh a sideways laughing partially crying emoji ah i'm tearing it up tonight this is living the dream so i'm trying to see if there's a way to make that better um we do a weekly uh open mic and my friend's coffee joint it's a cedar beans coffee joint in cedar grove new jersey we got that figured out it's a blast it's really fun we're really uh trying to take charge of all this and and and and and fit into the new world right

Unknown: okay see you guys later so you you you you you you

Natty Bumpercar: what's going on bumper podcast it is me i am me you are you and we are we and it is the bumper podcast and we're hanging out living large in charge how are you i'm excited i know you didn't ask yet because i just asked you but i'm excited i just want you to know that has anyone ever done that to you like they come up and in their eyes you see there's a lot of movement there's a lot of something and they say uh they ask you a question hey how's it going and and but they don't really care how it's going hey how's it going me i'm great they're just kind of like they just want to ask you how things are going so that they can then talk about themselves i feel like i just did that to you and i apologize how are you good that's that's what i wanted to hear that's what i wanted to know that's what i wanted to see um so me why am i good uh i have cleaned my desk studio area to the point where i can actually have my computer here i can have my uh devices all this stuff is all set up i haven't had it like this in like years so i'm sitting in my little chair and i'm talking into my microphone my i have my hands they're like i'm holding my hands in front of me like very professionally i feel like and um how weird that's well that's certainly new uh come on in come on

Aloysious J. Pig: hey natty what's going on it's me alo it's just jay pig pig what's going on did you see the new

Natty Bumpercar: we have newfangled stuff yeah i noticed that there's a lock on the door now and i had to actually uh ring a doorbell and then you had to buzz me in like what it's like security stuff going on yeah i don't understand well i was doing a lot of cleaning and um because of that other show isn't it no yeah it's that other show no you're doing that show no no no yep yep yep yep yep i know it is listen everybody uh i don't know if i should be the one to tell you but uh we've been doing a show every single day monday through friday we didn't do a show last friday yes exactly producer thanks for jumping in well it's because

Producer: i there was a mess up with the audio and everybody i just wanted you to know that i felt so terrible about it and my normal focus is on the bumper podcast which is all audio all the time these other shows yeah stop yeah stop okay thank you okay uh yeah so we didn't have a show friday but

Natty Bumpercar: that that doesn't that's not what we're talking about we're gonna we're gonna move forward we're not gonna look in the past at the problems we're gonna learn from our mistakes and we're gonna keep on rocking and keep on rolling anyway this show is called hanging out with pig i am of course pig aloe wishes j pig and um yeah we do it every day and it's like uh it's it's live streamed because we live in the future now and we uh we've been adding stuff to the show every week we uh we got we got this uh cow named melissa we got um the producer he was on there the other day um this dude professor penguin he's on there reading books and whatnot um and uh there's one other i can't there's a few other there's a lot there's a lot of people did you just hit the microphone yeah i did hit the mic because i'm not used to this the microphone now it's weird yeah being on a live show now you wouldn't understand because you're not on it but okay well it's true so pig has his own show every single day of the week it happens at around uh 12 o'clock eastern time and it's uh live streamed on facebook and youtube and it's a live streamed on facebook and youtube and it's a live streamed on facebook and periscope which is twitter and it's about 20 25 minutes long and it's it's got so much stuff like there's there's an art segment there's um a reading segment there's a little exercise segment there's songs it's it's i gotta say i'm pretty impressed with what pig has done uh putting this

Producer: all together i actually have done a lot of these work on putting it together as well i do behind the scenes of course but you know um without producing there would not be a much of a show uh turn his microphone off i actually control the microphones oh look who's got his big britches on today i'm actually a frog and i don't wear britches but i think i get the point that you're

Natty Bumpercar: saying yeah so it's super cool and uh it's it's all obviously kid friendly just the same way this show is it's all kid friendly and um but it's living currently at a place on facebook called coffee can alley because that's where everything we do lives and we finally grabbed that page and we put uh the hanging out with pig uh videos on there we put this the bumper podcast on there and um you know we're trying to make a lot of bunch of other stuff too just to occupy people i know there's a lot of people making a lot of stuff right now but cool that's all the better for you the people who like stuff am i right of course i'm right yeah so uh i was trying to like poke fun at you earlier to see you know to be like i always just funny on his show of course but i uh oh oh oh is that the doorbell yep yep that's what it sounds like yeah that's the doorbell that's what it sounds like whoa i've never had you're the first one who rang it this is the first person who has now uh rang the doorbell twice so that's uh pretty uh crazy jeez all right hold on uh hey uh come on in oh where's it gonna be we gotta work on that creek it's very loud hey what's going on trunks hi everybody it's me trunks hey trunks i like to do the weather report okay so what i do on the weather report we get it i do the weather report with trunks so this is the first bit of cross-pollinization between um hanging out with pig in the bumper podcast so your name is trunks right and you are an elephant right boo i give the weather report every day on the hanging out with pig and we talk about weather the other day we talked about people's favorite weather and somebody liked winter and somebody liked spring and a couple of people even liked summer

Producer: i don't know if anyone liked fall though i actually enjoy the fall quite a bit it's very good and it's moist outside and so it's good for my my frog skin sorry you didn't no i know no one asked me but yeah nobody feel like i should check in okay and give a vote yeah it's very important

Aloysious J. Pig: to vote in our society cool uh so trunks uh it's so weird of you to show up uh it's not like we plan this or anything

Natty Bumpercar: right oh no we never planned this at all okay um so trunks i have to ask because i have listened and watched the uh hanging out with pig a few times and uh i've noticed you seem a little sad you seem a little bit down i'm should i be worried about you i don't want anybody to be upset no no it's just how i feel and who i am i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i am and i am me and we are we it's just a new uh are we are we kind of soft selling the new uh hit summer jam for this summer i am i and me on me i forgot how it goes and we are we how did i not remember he just said it i think i think it's like uh you are you and i am me and we are the way that we're supposed to be you see that's a really nice flow you got there speaking of uh uh rain flow did you know that um rain is actually measured in in in inches so you see rain falling from the sky and actually we're not gonna do a weather report right now okay yeah that makes sense that's for the other show okay i was getting a little excited there yeah i appreciate that and i'm glad that you're showing a your range a whole other side of you trunks but uh yeah we're gonna say we're gonna save that uh the weather talk for other places obviously cool um thank you for that uh pig so yeah wow so hanging out with big i mean this feels like it's been a big commercial but it's not um we talked about cleaning have you been cleaning your house i found so much stuff that i didn't even know existed anymore stuff that i thought was lost or thrown away we had a big flood a few years ago and i'm actually now finding stuff for the weather talk for the weather talk for the weather talk for the weather talk for the weather from the big flood that wasn't damaged which is pretty exciting i found uh notebooks full of stuff uh all kinds of sketchbooks i found canvases that don't have anything on them that i can paint now oh my goodness gracious it's it's so that's been kind of wonderful um what i like to do is i go a big clean and then i organize and then i can see everything and then uh when i'm looking at everything then i can start cleaning it all over again that makes sense i'm assuming which is mean like i'm guessing that it's going to take me like three passes so three times of going through everything to actually get it to where i want to get it but i mean we've lived in this house for uh five years almost six years and these are things that like i've been wanting to do since we moved in i put all of my baseball cards and comic books up in the attic gone i took everything out of the garage and i built some shelves and i gathered up all my paintings and i put them all right there done um like what else have we done we moved a giant set of shelves from one side of the room in the basement to the other and we we got rid of uh 14 rubbermaid boxes like those big boxes that are full of stuff gone and we're recycling stuff uh we're shredding stuff we're we have a two big boxes of stuff to donate so i mean it's it's been it feels great ah it feels like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders yay and there's still so much to do which is also pretty exciting um so anyway what i would suggest is if you're feeling kind of gloomy if you're feeling kind of glum go into your room and dig around some to go under your bed dig into your closet and do something about it if you're feeling kind of gloomy if you're feeling kind of gloomy do a little bit of cleaning who knows what you'll find you might find an old toy that you didn't even remember that you had you might find um some old clothes that you'll look at you'll be like oh i remember these clothes these make me happy there's just a lot there's a lot to do is what i'm saying um so go try to do that go try to do that for yourself and i think that you will be happy in the meantime from a commercial standpoint do go look at coffee can alley on facebook if you feel like it do go look for the hanging out with pig videos because they're a treat i'm so proud of them and my kids are helping me make them and that's super thrilling and uh they really keep me on my toes which is also great so do that have fun wash your hands stay away from people you're awesome high five oh i didn't know he was gonna talk this much he goes on and on and on yeah non-stop yeah it's just like sometimes i'm like put the brakes on exactly trunks egg exactly

    About This Episode

In this special Easter episode of Bumperpodcast, host Natty Bumpercar and Aloysious J. Pig receive an unexpected visit from the Easter Bunny himself, who stands six foot seven (with two-foot ears). The six-foot-seven rabbit discusses Easter basket delivery protocols during quarantine, including proper safety measures and social distancing on the bunny trail. Rufus T. Rufus briefly interrupts to discuss contractual loopholes before being dismissed. Natty performs an original parody song called "Peter Cleaning Tail" about practicing safe hygiene during the holiday. The episode wraps with heartfelt advice about self-care, structure, and kindness during challenging times, plus a reminder to leave carrots for the Easter Bunny on his long journey.

    Memorable Quotes

“I am the Easter bunny, and I am watching, and I am seeing, and I'm hearing, and what I've seen and what I have heard is that everyone here is very nice to each other.”

    — Easter Bunny

“I'm not a basket kind of pig. I don't need baskets all over my house. I'm not going to store stuff in baskets.”

    — Aloysious J. Pig

“You start small at your house. You take care of yourself and everyone there and then you expand it out and you don't leave your house and so you're not going to spread this thing around.”

Natty Bumpercar: hey everybody it's me natty bumper car and this is the bumper podcast your very favorite family friendly silly podcast that happens every so often weekly maybe i don't know time has gotten very strange these days but can i tell you what i'm excited about something that is very time sensitive something that is happening this weekend yes you should absolutely just tell everybody you're doing all this build up and and you should tell them because they're gonna then they don't know what you're talking about they hear you're excited but they ain't know what you're excited about correctamundo pig my friend everybody that's aloysius j pig you may know him you may love him if you don't then you should you should you should because he's pretty swell i'm pretty thank you natty you're in a really good mood today like i've listened to a few in a podcast lately and you seem a little bit dour a little bit down a little bit sour with all of your frowns you're saying i sound good you my friend also sound good um that was a good rhyme looking bit what was it sour looking kind of down looking kind of dour with all your frowns oh go pig go pig i'm going go you stopped i thought you were gonna keep going yeah that's not how i'm no i'm sorry i got confused we need to work on yeah i'm sorry anyway sorry about that hey aloysius um i am in a good mood and it's because of what's happening this weekend we're gonna get a very special visitor this weekend i'm hoping i don't know but do you know that this weekend is easter for everyone in this house maybe you celebrate something different and that's 100 cool you do you but here we have a giant rabbit who hops down a bunny trail hippity hopping and and then you know what he does he drops off baskets and i i know a lot of crazy things happen here at headquarters on the podcast but if we ever had a giant i don't know with the ears i'm gonna guess seven foot rabbit in the building i'm actually i'm actually six six foot six foot seven the ears alone are two feet tall i am a four foot seven the ears, but with the ears, I am six foot seven. Okay. He's a six foot, he's, the Easter bunny is here, everybody. I'm so excited. He's right there, and he's looking at you, so he hears you talking about him. He's also got very large ears. I believe he said they were two feet tall. Exactly. They were two feet tall, and I am the Easter bunny, and it's one little seal, and it's a beautiful spring day out here, and I'm hoping everyone is very healthy and very well. And I'm hoping I never received any kind of a list from you, or a letter, or anything. I'm so sorry we didn't send the Easter bunny a letter this year, but it's because we, you know, we're quarantined, we're at home, and we couldn't go to the post office, and we couldn't mail you a letter, and I'm hoping that this doesn't ruin all of Easter. You see how it works, man? There's loopholes. There's all these rules, and they're going to try to take your holiday away, your Easter basket, just because you didn't follow some rule and send this bunny dude a letter? I never said that. I said that I never received a letter. I didn't say you were not going to get an Easter basket, and listen to me, Mr. Aloysius J. Pig. I am the Easter bunny, and I am watching, and I am seeing, and I'm hearing, and what I've seen and what I have heard is that everyone here is very nice to each other, and I do appreciate that very much, and so we shall see come Sunday morning if there's any kind of basket or anything around your house, eh?

Rufus T. Rufus: Uh, excuse me, I didn't mean to put myself into the fray, but, uh, I am Rufus T. Rufus, and my understanding is that someone was referring to some sort of loopholes, and any time you bring up contractual entities with loopholes and such whatnots and et ceteras I like to be part of the conversation ipso facto where in two fro I can relegate, and of course I can bill for hours, if you understand what I'm saying. Times are tough. Times are real tough around here.

Natty Bumpercar: Uh, thank you, Rufus. I appreciate you. Uh, you did, thanks for coming in, but I think we have this all handled, and I, uh…

Rufus T. Rufus: What in the net is that? A seven foot tall rabbit in the building? What in the world is happening? I've never seen such a crazy thing. I mean, I've seen all sorts of things here at the Bumper Podcast at the headquarters, but I have never seen a seven foot tall, uh, uh, uh, bunny, right, like this one

Natty Bumpercar: right there. Actually, he said he's not… I'm six foot seven. The ears, I'm six foot seven. Yeah, six foot seven. Okay. But the ears, again, if you took the ears off, and then I'm four foot seven, the ears are tall for you. I'm very tall, and I'm just, and I'm very tall.

Rufus T. Rufus: Well, I do declare, uh, if I ain't seen everything, I do believe I've seen almost all of it now. But, uh, Natty, if I'm also correct, you're not gonna be allowing me to bill for this time?

Natty Bumpercar: No, there was nothing to bill for. So go ahead and go. Well, then, I shall, uh, go my

Rufus T. Rufus: separate ways. Thanks. Uh, Mr. Easter Bunny, I do hope to see you, uh, or not see you, but I hope you, I hope you understand. I would appreciate it. I think I understand. Exactly. Exactly. Thank you, sir. Everyone have a wonderful weekend, and, uh, enjoy your spring day. Alright. Thank you

Natty Bumpercar: so much, Rufus. Um, wow. So, Easter Bunny, I'm, again, I'm sorry that we didn't send you a letter, but there was obvious and very serious reasons why we didn't. We didn't, it wasn't safe. Um, I hope that you guys along the bunny trail are practicing all of the, uh, paw washing, and, uh, masks and gloves and everything, because, you know, if you are going to be dropping off baskets all around the world, all around the country, everywhere, I want to make sure that they're safe for everybody that you drop them off with. We're following all the rules, the regulations, of course, and we're going to make, you know, all the baskets are safe, of course, and we, uh, we're wearing gloves, and we're wearing masks and everything. It's wonderful. It's going to be a great Easter. I'm very excited about Easter. It's going to be a big, big, big, big, big time. That's what I'm talking about. Safety first. Uh, you know, my favorite thing about the Easter, it's not the basket, it's not the grass in the basket, because that just really makes a mess. If we could get rid of the, you know, the fake grass in the basket, I'd love that. I really, I don't even need a basket. If you could just give me a pile of stuff, I'm fine with a pile. Because here's the thing with the baskets, is after Easter, I got this basket. I'm not a basket kind of pig. I don't need baskets all over my house. I'm not going to store stuff in baskets. I'm not going to put stuff in baskets. I'm not going to test it. I'm not going to test it. I am not the pig who needs a basket. You're really on point with your rhymes today, pig. I'm very impressed. Thanks, bro. Nothing but time. Nothing but time here, sitting here, working on the rhymes, if you get it. Actually, we can't just leave a pile of stuff that we, Easter basket. It's the Easter rule. We give a basket and then you have your gifts and your chocolates and everything inside of the basket, and it's very it's very nice. All right. Well, that, I mean, that makes sense to me. I mean, if you're going to bend the rules on us not having to send you a letter, then if you have to stick to the rules of having a basket, I'm totally cool with that. And I'll bet it's a lot easier for you to carry everything around the bunny trail to everybody's house if there's a basket involved because you can just hold the handle, zip in, hide the basket, run out. Yep. Yep. Yep. That makes sense. Exactly. It's very difficult to carry the baskets and everything around everywhere, and we have to visit all the children around the world who celebrate Easter, and we give them baskets. If I just had piles and piles and piles, things would get mixed and people would get confused, and no one would know what was going on, and it would just be absolute chaos, and we can't have it. Yep. We cannot have anarchy on Christmas. Christmas? Excuse me. Easter. I got confused. I'm very… A lot on my mind. A lot on my mind right now. There's a lot going on. There's a lot going on in the world. Well, listen, Easter Bunny, I know, I don't even, I appreciate you coming by and spending some time with us. It's super awesome and super sweet, and before you leave, I hope you don't mind if I… You don't have to do this, Ned. You don't have to show him. No, I just wanted to please… He doesn't… No, he doesn't need to… Fine, go ahead. Thank you. Yeah, alright, go ahead. So, I wrote this thing, you know, because everyone is so concerned about the cleaning and what I was saying about the bunnies and the… Not the bunnies, the masks and the gloves and everything. Proper protocol. We have to follow it, right? Yep. And so I wrote this thing, it's called Peter Cleaning Tail. Nope, my name is actually Cottontail. Cottontail. I know you're Cottontail, but I was making a little joke. It's very funny. Awesome. So, it's, you know the old Peter Cottontail, like, here comes Peter Cottontail, that one. So, this is Peter Cleaning Tail, so it's kind of a, you know, whatever. But it's, so it's to that tune. So, I wrote this, we'll see how it works out, but here, I'll try to, you know, sing-song it, I guess. Here comes Peter Cleaning Tail. Wearing a mask on the bunny trail. Practicing social distancing the whole way. Bringing every girl and boy baskets full of antibacterial joy. And things to make your Easter clean and safe. Oh, here comes Peter Cleaning Tail. Did he just cough on the bunny trail? How many times did he wash his paws today? Here comes Peter Cleaning Tail, hopping down the bunny trail. Hippity-hoppiting with disinfecting spray. Try to do the things you should. Make sure to sanitize. Extra good and heel roll gloves and toilet paper your way. Oh, wow. Natty, you wrote that? I did, I did. It's cute, huh? Nice. And you've been taking singing lessons? No, I really, I haven't been taking singing lessons. I was just messing with you. I knew you hadn't. Bro, maybe

Rufus T. Rufus: you should have warmed up first.

Natty Bumpercar: Yeah, thanks. Appreciate that. It was just on the spot. Easter Bunny's here. I didn't know I was going to have to sing today. But listen, everyone, I hope you are safe and well and sound at home. I hope you're taking care of yourselves. I hope that you are practicing social distancing. I hope you're taking, washing your hands and showering and, you know, doing all the things that you need to do to keep yourself together. Make some sort of structure in your life because right now everyone's structure is just so completely out of whack. So, kind of get up in the morning, brush your teeth, maybe make your bed, change out of your pajamas every so often. Not every day. Listen, I'm not asking much here. You know, make sure to take showers. Showers are really nice to get you clean and get you refreshed and get you ready for the day. Eat your meals. Eat good food, healthy food. Don't just eat junk or else you're going to feel kind of terrible. And most of all, be nice to everybody who's in the house with you because they love you. Right? And they want you to be as good as you can be and you want them to be as good as they can be because you're all in this together. And ultimately we're all in this together. Right? So you start small at your house. You take care of yourself and everyone there and then you expand it out and you don't leave your house and so you're not going to spread this thing around and then we'll get to go out and all hang out and high five very soon. I mean air high five. I'm not actually going to high five anyone ever again. Ladies and gentlemen this has been the Bumper Podcast and I want to thank our guest today, the Easter Bunny. Thank you so much for having me. I really appreciate it, of course. Thanks. I forgot, did you like the thing that I wrote? It was very funny. Thanks. It was very wonderful. I want to add in everything you just said that everyone take care of yourself and be wonderful and don't forget maybe leave me a carrot if you can on Sunday because it's a very long trip and I want you to have a wonderful day and I need to keep some carrot in my belly so I can keep it going. Wait, did the Easter Bunny seriously just use the Bumper Podcast to ask people for carrots? Hey, crazy things that happen. Alright, see you later seven foot tall bunny. Again, I'm actually six foot seven. Yeah, four foot. Two foot years. Four foot seven. Alright, everybody. Thank you so much. Have a great time. We'll see you next week. Whoa! I'm Natty Bumper Car.

    About This Episode

In episode 374, Natty Bumpercar gets candid about exhaustion after one of his four children experiences three nightmares in one night. Drawing from his middle-of-the-night comforting duties at 2:33 AM, Natty develops an elaborate theory about how the brain processes stress through a "day crew" and "night crew" filing system. He proposes that unlabeled emotional folders lead to nightmares, suggesting a color-coded organizational system for feelings to help the night shift brain workers process daily anxieties more effectively. Natty also shares his thoughts on creating helpful daily routines and structures for children while maintaining flexibility for spontaneous fun. This sleepy but thoughtful episode balances humor with genuine parenting wisdom about managing childhood stress and emotions.

    Memorable Quotes

“I went to a grocery store and we walked around and we ate samples. I had a little flaky pastry with some cheese in it. They gave me a piece of steak at the sample booth. What kind of magical dreamlike store is this?”

    — Natty Bumpercar

“The night crew opens it and they're like whoa whoa whoa we didn't deal with any of that stuff today. Let's just throw it all against the board and see what happens. The dream board as it were.”

    — Natty Bumpercar

“You want to have it so it can bend a little bit. Be spontaneous. Go have some fun, loosen up, live a little bit. Within certain boundaries, within certain structures.”

Natty Bumpercar: well well well if it isn't the bumper pod casketeers my favorite people in the whole wide world hi there guys how's it going it's me natty bumper car and this is the bumper podcast and today we're gonna talk about being tired being so very tired one of my four children had three nightmares last night it was like a christmas carol but in the middle of uh march he had he had one one and he but he couldn't remember his his nightmares have you ever had nightmares before man i have and they can be so scary after he had his nightmares and i finally got to sleep um i didn't have a nightmare but i had a fun dream which is it's weird for me to say it's a fun dream but i went to a grocery store and i had a fun dream and i had a fun dream and grocery store with a couple of friends of mine and we walked around and we ate samples i mean it doesn't sound like a lot of fun i understand that but for me at the moment it seemed like the best kind of fun um i had this i had this a little uh a little pastry a little flaky pastry with some kind of cheese in it oh it was so good i had um a piece of steak they gave me a piece of steak at the sample booth i've never i've never had steak at a sample booth what kind of magical dreamlike store is this i don't know but when i was asking him about his dreams he couldn't remember all he remembered is that he was sad and scared and and it made me sad and so i i came into his bed and uh i i laid down so what we do is because he has you know a tiny little bed is his head's on one end then my head's on the other and then our feet are going in the opposite direction and that's just so we have you know a little bit a little bit of room right to to try to get back to sleep and then i take my my left hand and i kind of laid it down over his uh onto his legs and just kind of patted him just saying it'll be okay buddy it'll be okay it'll be okay and he calmed down and you know before we even he came into the room and got us and uh i gave him a big hug big tight bear and i said are you okay what's the matter are you gonna be you're gonna be okay you know daddy's here mommy's here we're we're here everyone is here and he said okay because he was very tired also it was the middle of the night when this happened and like like 2 33 in the morning that's very very early or late i guess it's it's this is a uh is your glass half full or half empty kind of it was very middle of the night we'll say that and so i got him back into bed and uh he actually he wanted a little a cup of water and then he used the restroom and then we got back into bed and i i patted his legs and i said it's going to be okay it's going to be okay now i have a theory and you can tell me what you think about this theory but i have a theory and my theory is if you're in uh if you have some sort of sort of stress some sort of tumult some sort of uh rough times during the day maybe that sometimes your brain doesn't want to deal with that rough stuff that stress at that moment and so your brain stores it all into a folder back in the back of your brain right into the your storage and then when you lay down the night crew comes in and uh takes over from the day shift they said hey see you later and they're like hey night shift we'll see you later and the night shift comes in and they've got this stack of folders you know from the day they're like okay we got to process all this stuff that happened during the day you know they start going through the folders oh look this we played kickball it's a little let's have a little kickball dream even if it's just a tiny dream oh this folder is very heavy and very dark and very oh well let's open it oh my goodness there's a lot of stress this child was worried about something oh what what in the world maybe it's that you have a test coming up maybe it's that somebody said something mean to you maybe your dog ate your ball or something like that you know all that stuff goes into your folder your sad scared worried angry folder whatever and then when this night crew opens it they're like whoa whoa whoa whoa we didn't deal with any of that stuff today you know what let's just throw it all against the board and see what happens what happens the dream board as it were and then you get to deal with whatever i guess comes from there so your brain hasn't dealt with whatever issues you had during the day you've internalized everything you've taken all your emotions and you've squished them squished them squished them squished them squished them squished them down into you and then at night they're like oh i gotta get out of here and then and then maybe you might you might have little nightmares which is sad right but understandable also you have a lot going on everybody's got a lot going on in their day in their minds not just like the normal stuff but maybe your schedule has been uh shifted around maybe things are a little bit different than they used to be and even just different can be enough to to to make you worried about things or uh to get you anxious or to get you angry and and you know if if you're too tired or whatever to or you're too busy to deal with uh that anxiety that that anxiousness that anger then you it all goes into that folder the night crew doesn't know what to do with it they just open it up and then boom bam boom whatever happens happens right i think that maybe a better way for the day crew to deal with this stuff is to label the folders right and so then the night crew's not coming into this blind the maybe we're gonna have uh you can even color code it right maybe blue for happy uh red for angry yellow for sad uh uh green maybe for worry i don't know purple you know like purple for silly makes sense right uh and then so then you can put all your your thoughts from the day into these folders and so then when they're done they're going to be in the folder the night crew comes along they can they can look at it and they can go okay you know what let's let's this looks like this uh angry folder sad folder is pretty thick tonight let's how about let's work through these other ones we're gonna leave this one here for the uh for the day crew or maybe we'll just take a little bit out of of that one and we can spread it in with the other stuff just to try to minimize the impact of the bad stuff because you know if the folders aren't labeled they don't have any idea what's in them and they're just gonna open it up and then wham bam you got a crazy dream man right which it it's bad because then if you have crazy dreams that keep you up at night then the next day you're tired right and that just means you're almost set up for more rough stuff to happen which is just going to keep filling up that bad folder which is just going to keep on making you anxious and making you worried and making you upset and without some sort of labeling system i'm telling you it's just going to become a spiral it's just going to keep happening it's going to come around going to keep coming around it's like a trolley car here it comes boom here it comes boom here it comes so we need to talk to the manager whoever is managing your brain i'm assuming it's you and we need to figure out uh a way to set up a good system for your uh daily activities your thoughts your feelings your emotions to be more properly labeled so that the night crew isn't coming in blind um and then from there i i can only see good things happening i can only imagine that uh things are gonna get better and better maybe not here's the thing too if we're going to transition to a whole new um system then there's going to be some bumps in the road there's gonna be some confusion there might even be some mislabeling which could lead to just oh who knows like let's let's say you have uh you're really really really really really really really angry about something and that ends up in the pink folder and they open up the pink folder expecting you know what i don't know bubble gum and rainbows and good times and then all of a sudden this angry thing in the oh it's just gonna that's gonna be we're gonna have to write up a report for that okay that's gonna have to be looked at we're gonna have to figure out where where where in the chain of command and here no one's gonna get into trouble because this is a brand new system and we're not the kind of company that's gonna you know point at people and say you did this but we are going to try to figure out how to make it better and how to not have that happen again okay so let's work on that i think it's become very important in my day trying to establish uh structures trying to establish uh a good foundation so like when i we've been putting up uh lists in the house so um when you wake up and there's like a nice piece of paper and it says um uh go potty brush your teeth make your bed right and then you know then go downstairs have some breakfast relax and then we'll start the day right and that even just like adding little things like that little constants are good for your brain because if your brain knows where it has to go it doesn't have to wake up and then think like what am i gonna do now it's like oh i'm just gonna go potty i'm gonna brush my teeth i'm gonna make my bed boom boom boom boom boom and then every day you get into a rhythm and the rhythm and the rhythm and it's gonna make you feel a little bit better i think that's my theory now there's variables right let's say you have uh lunch time on there and then you have go outside and play and it's raining well then we're gonna have to shift gears gotta be flexible too that's the thing when you have a system you don't want it to be a rigid system right a rigid system means it's not flexible you want to have it so that it can bend a little bit so it can so you can do other things too and and that allows you for the freedom to to move around a little bit right to be spontaneous it's spontaneous you know what that means it it means uh hey you're supposed to do this thing hey but do you want to do this thing and you're like yeah i'd love to do that thing you know if it was a rigid system you wouldn't be able to you'd be stuck doing the first thing but if we're a little bit flexible hey be spontaneous go do this other thing that's okay do you do what you want that's go have some fun loosen up live a little bit right within certain boundaries within certain you know structures it's all about structures um what i like about structures is kind of what i was saying it helps me to know what i'm supposed to do and then i can choose if i want to do it or not which is what i think you should do because you're awesome okay
